Title: Maintenance Crew Leader -- Bryant AHQ Hiring Range:
$36,218 - $58,854 Pay Band: 3 Agency: VA Dept of Transportation

Recruitment Type: General Public - G Job Duties Candidates must
have a minimum of a Commercial Learners Permit prior to being
hired. Preference will be given to candidates who already have a
current CDL.
Position will serve as a lead worker on a work crew and perform a
combination of skilled equipment operations, preventive maintenance
and manual labor tasks to maintain Virginia roadways. Position will
plan work schedules and identify and assign manpower, materials and
equipment needed to accomplish work. Will determine and demonstrate
proper work site protection techniques, ensure crew has proper
personal protective equipment and train crew members in proper
safety methods. Will apply MUTCD for detours, lane closures, work
zones, etc., and take corrective action when unsafe conditions are
identified. Will conduct on-the-job training and recommend
additional training needs to the Superintendent. Will assist with
recordkeeping and administrative tasks and serve as back-up to AHQ
supervision. Additional positions in the Appomattox Residency may
be filled from this applicant pool within 90 days of the closing
date.

Minimum Qualifications Considerable knowledge of highway
maintenance/construction practices and procedures. Basic knowledge
of inventory procedures. Skill operating and maintaining
light/medium/heavy duty trucks and equipment. Ability to lead,
direct and train others. Ability to complete paperwork and maintain
records. Ability to perform manual labor and use hand and power
tools. Ability to interpret and apply work zone safety and traffic
control manuals. Preferred Qualifications: Experience using
computers and software applications. Experience applying inventory
practices and procedures. Experience leading and training work
crews. Emergency operations experience to include snow removal,
storm damage and accident clean-up. Experience preparing reports
and keeping records. Possession of Intermediate Work Zone and DEQ
Land Disturber certifications, as well as a current CDL and DOT

to the outdoors, weather in all seasons, animals and insects.
Ability to perform heavy manual labor to include standing, bending,
and frequent lifting up to 50 lbs. Ability to obtain First Aid,
CPR, land disturber, work zone safety and flagger certifications.
Must obtain a valid CDL and DOT medical card within 11 months of
employment and maintain thereafter. Fingerprint-based criminal
history record check, references, work history and DMV driving
record will be verified prior to employment. Selected applicant
must pass a pre-employment physical and drug screen. Requires
approved safety shoes. Position is designated as essential and will
be required to work outside normal hours in emergencies and
inclement weather to include nights, weekends and holidays.
Applicants must be eligible to work in the United States. H1B VISA

All drivers hired without a valid CDL in hand are required to
obtain their CDL within 11 months of their hire date. You cannot
operate commercial motor vehicles prior to receiving the necessary
licensure and medical certification. Federal Motor Carrier Safety
Administration (FMCSA) regulations require entry-level drivers
(drivers who are seeking to take the skills test in order to obtain
a CDL for the first time, upgrade their CDL from a Class B to a
Class A, or take the knowledge test to obtain a hazardous materials
endorsement for the first time) to complete FMCSA- approved
Entry-Level Driving (ELD) Training before the Department of Motor
Vehicles can grant the requested CDL or endorsement. The course is
comprised of 160 hours, on average, of training. VDOT is willing to
assist with your enrollment in and payment for the course to obtain
your CDL upon your acceptance of an ELD Training Tuition tenure and
repayment agreement.
