Job Description:
Nature & Scope The Chief Building Engineer provides and manages
day to day maintenance services throughout all facilities managed
by the organization. This position is also responsible for
providing leadership to ensure ongoing TJC readiness, compliance
with local, state, federal and regulatory requirements and
maintenance of compliance documentation. This individual ensures
for completion of annual audits of hospitals and clinics for which
they are assigned. In addition, this position ensures a safe and
pristine environment through customer friendly, quality service.
Major Accountabilities Provides facilities and operational
management leadership and advice to hospital administration and
facilities management staff. Leads and manages maintenance staff,
Building Engineer, third party security staff and environmental
services staff for assigned facility and is the departmental
representative for the maintenance staff to other staff, patients,
patients families and vendors. In collaboration with Human
Resources, provide supervision, support and coaching to employees.
Other supervisory activities include (but are not limited to): o
Interviewing, hiring, goal development, onboarding and insuring
continuous training requirements and compliance items are met. o
1:1 and team meetings to discuss successes, challenges, new
projects, innovations, company changes, etc. o Timely coaching and
disciplinary action (delivery and documentation), as needed o
Completing performance reviews for employees within company
designated timeframes o Maintain employees timecards in Payroll
system, insuring the correct hours are accounted for, and paid time
off request are promptly addressed. Provides input to the
development/revisions of policies and procedures related to
environment of care, life safety, and emergency management
programs. Supports administrative and facilities management staff
on a proactive basis with Joint Commission accreditation and
regulatory compliance activities. Assists staff with Life Safety
Code assessment of hospital buildings, and preparation of Statement
of Conditions. Serves as a liaison between all hospitals and
corporate contacts with respect to capital projects, physical
facilities maintenance, and performance improvement and cost
control initiatives. Attracts, selects, on-boards, develops and
retains talented individuals to meet the goals and strategies of
the organization and department. Demonstrates ability to safely and
effectively test and operate the emergency power supply system
(EPSS) and its components. Works independently in the specified
time frame as assigned per job task under the direction of the
supervisor on installation, maintenance and repair of mechanical,
electrical, HVAC, pneumatic, oxygen and telephone systems.
Maintains familiarity with state and local codes when performing
work with no more than two infractions per review period. Maintains
skills related to automotive, carpentry telephone repair,
pneumatics, stationary engineer, hydraulics and computers at all
times. Partnering with Sr. Director, Hospital Facilities Operations
and Facilities Managers, plans and lays out of work, interpreting,
examining, drawing, reporting, and recording work completion on a
daily basis. Performs all types of control maintenance, major types
of work for building construction and repair, equipment overhaul
and completing such assignments within time schedule. Maintains a
working knowledge of all facility systems and all applicable
regulatory standards. Understands detailed responsibilities
required of position including routine and non-routine tasks and
documentation and reporting requirements. Recognized when outside
vendors are required to perform services for the organization and
makes appropriate recommendations to direct supervisor. Maintains
positive vendor relationships and always represents the
organization in a positive and professional manner. Dresses and
acts in a professional and customer focused manner at all times.
This position may require driving a company vehicle. Employee must
have a clean driving record in order to qualify. (A clean driving
record is one that is free of accidents, moving violations or
points.) Embodies the organizations core values at all times.
Completes mandatory training and courses required by completion
date. Reports questionable situations, concerns, complaints or
harassment to direct supervisor, Compliance or Human Resources
immediately. Other duties as assigned. Experience 5-7 years of
operations and/or facilities management experience in a commercial
environment. Minimum of 5 years of supervisory experience with
current experience. Must have a broad knowledge of Joint Commission
(TJC) standards, OSHA, EPA, NFPA and other government, state and
local regulatory agencies standards. Proven leadership skills for a
diverse workforce with varying skills and abilities. Training in
electrical, plumbing, HVAC, carpentry, boiler maintenance, fire
alarms, sprinkler systems, telecommunication systems and various
other hospital equipment preferred. Previous light industrial,
commercial operations, or hospital maintenance experience desirable
but not mandatory. Specific Skills Must possess and demonstrate a
high degree of leadership, transparency, organizational ability,
and outstanding oral and written communication skills. Strong
computer skills, including; Microsoft Suite and Outlook. Strong
interpersonal skills and professional boundaries. Ability to
communicate effectively at all levels with patients, families,
peers, employees and manager. Follows all procedures and protocols
for patient care and documentation. Exercises good judgement
regarding interpersonal interactions with patients, families, peers
and manager at all times. Completes continuing education
requirements as mandated by credentialing agencies. Works with
team; builds and fosters professional relationships. Welcomes
feedback; proactively offers suggestions. Works independently;
schedules time efficiently; thinks proactively. Embraces change
Machines, Equipment Used: Motor vehicles, outdoor equipment such as
lawn mowers and snow blowers, personal protective equipment,
dollies, pressure washer , hand tools, ladders, air compressors,
brooms, vacuums, meters, welders, leak detection equipment, gauges,
carts, knives, hose, maps, power tools, scaffolds, air powered
equipment, hazardous chemicals, torches, refrigerant recovery
equipment, vacuum pumps, and other HVAC/R equipment. General office
equipment such as telephone, copy machine, fax machine, calculator,
computer. Physical Requirements Good visual acuity and ability to
communicate. Ability to lift, lower, push, pull, and retrieve
objects weighing a minimum of 50 pounds including medical supplies
and equipment and the transferring and repositioning of patients.
Reasonable assistance may be requested when lifting, pushing,
and/or pulling are undertaken which exceeds these minimum
requirements. Must demonstrate the ability to tolerate frequent
position changes such as twisting, stooping, reaching, squatting,
kneeling, pushing/pulling, and bending positions for complete
shift. Ability to work on ladders, scaffolds and be able to sit,
stand and walk for momentary to extended periods of time. Ability
to safely work with hazardous materials. General Skills and
Requirements Able to communicate effectively in English, both
verbally and in writing. Demonstrates competency and sensitivity in
the area of multi-cultural, racial, religious/spiritual, gender
identity, and sexual orientation issues. Meets dress code
standards; appearance is professional, neat, and clean. Evaluates
own performance and sees opportunity for growth. Reports to work
on-time and as scheduled. Wears identification while on duty.
Represents the organization in a positive and professional manner.
Complies with all organizational policies. Communicates the
mission, ethics and goals of the facility, as well as the focus
statement of the department.
