Type: General Public - G Job Duties NOTE: Candidates must have a
minimum of a Commercial Learners Permit prior to being hired.
Preference will be given to candidates who already have a current
CDL. Positions will perform a combination of skilled equipment
operations, preventive maintenance and heavy manual labor while
conducting roadway maintenance activities. Equipment operations
include but are not limited to backhoes, dump trucks, tractors and
similar equipment. Positions perform emergency roadway operations
and must be willing to work outside normal work hours in
emergencies. Position will oversee inmate labor crews as needed,
and Department of Corrections-- security and firearms training will
be provided at VDOT--s expense. Additional vacancies may be filled
from this recruitment within 90 days of the closing date.
In addition to a comprehensive compensation and benefits package, a
$3,000 sign-on bonus is available for qualified candidates who have
a current CDL. Current and former VDOT employees are not eligible
for the sign-on bonus. In addition, this position is also eligible
for a referral bonus.

maintenance equipment, materials, methods and procedures.
Demonstrated experience operating dump trucks and other
light/medium/heavy-duty equipment and performing preventive
maintenance. Knowledge of safety policies, procedures and programs.
Skill in the operation and maintenance of hand and power tools.
Ability to perform heavy manual labor. Ability to read and follow
oral and written instructions. Preferred Qualifications: Possession
of a valid CDL and DOT medical card. Experience in roadway
maintenance or construction. High school graduate or GED preferred;
equivalent experience or training may substitute for education.

driver--s license, approved safety shoes and frequent daily travel
are required. Must be able to obtain CDL and DOT medical card
within 11 months of employment. Must be able to obtain first aid,
CPR, flagging and work zone safety certifications within a
reasonable period of employment. Ability to perform heavy manual
labor to include standing, bending and frequent lifting up to 50
lbs. Ability to work in diverse conditions including exposure to
weather, animals and/or insects, outdoors and in all seasons.
Fingerprint-based criminal history record check, references, work
history and DMV driving records will be verified. Selected
applicant must complete a pre-employment physical and drug screen.
Will be required to work outside normal hours in emergencies,
inclement weather and heavy traffic conditions. Applicants selected
for interview will be required to perform a skills demonstration as
part of the interview process. Applicants must be eligible to work
in the United States. H1B VISA Sponsorship is not available.
All drivers hired without a valid CDL in hand are required to
obtain their CDL within 11 months of their hire date. You cannot
operate commercial motor vehicles prior to receiving the necessary
licensure and medical certification. Federal Motor Carrier Safety
Administration (FMCSA) regulations require entry-level drivers
(drivers who are seeking to take the skills test in order to obtain
a CDL for the first time, upgrade their CDL from a Class A to a
Class B, or take the knowledge test to obtain a hazardous materials
endorsement for the first time) to complete FMCSA- approved
Entry-Level Driving (ELD) Training before the Department of Motor
Vehicles can grant the requested CDL or endorsement. The course is
comprised of 160 hours, on average, of training. VDOT is willing to
assist with your enrollment in and payment for the course to obtain
your CDL upon your acceptance of an ELD Training Tuition tenure and
repayment agreement.
