Oncology Treatment Center Nurses in the Duke Oncology Treatment
Center administer chemotherapy, immunotherapy agents, and research
medications via different routes of administration including
intravenous, oral, subcutaneous, intrathecal, intraperitoneal,
intravesicular, and through intrahepatic pumps. Nurses provide
education to patients and family members to ensure patients are
aware of chemotherapy side effects of each medication, the
importance of their treatment, and when to call a healthcare
provider once at home. Each nurse is responsible to understand
important lab results for each patient and determine body surface
area calculations. Other responsibilities include administering
electrolyte supplementation, intravenous fluids, pain medications,
blood products, and injections. Nurses in the Oncology Treatment
Center place peripheral IVs as well as access central lines
including port-a-caths, PICC lines, and Hickman central lines. Occ
Summary Plan and provide professional nursing ca reforpatients in
accordancewith physician orders and established policie sand
procedures. Work Performed Plan and provide prof essional nursing
care for patientsin accordancewith physician orders an destablished
policies and procedures to includecollecting and analyzingp atient
data, developing and implementingnursing care plans, establishing
interpersonal relationships withpatients, evaluating nursing care
givena ndcommunicating to properpersonnel relevant facts about
patients, action taken and patientresponses.Assist other nursing
personnel in the deliver y of nursing care and actas team leader or
charge nurse for a group ofpa tients or an entire unitas
assigned.Provide direction and guidance inthe proper use, care and
control ofmaterial resources; appraise qualityande ffectiveness of
material andequipment and report results to head nurse; maintain
standards ofcleanliness in assigned areas. Observe activitiesof
nursing staff andmake recommendations to nursing management for
improve ment in thequality and effectiveness of nursing care
given.Assistin the development and implementation of general
policies andproceduresdesigned to effect efficiency of

Qualifications Education Work requires graduation from an
accredited BSN program. Exception: Registered nurses hired between
July 1, 2014 and April 11, 2021 without a Bachelor's degree in
Nursing (or higher) are encouraged to enroll in an appropriate BSN
program within two years of their start date but must complete the
program within five years of their start date. Registered nurses
hired before July 1, 2014 are not required to enroll in a BSN
program to remain in this job classification. Experience Twelve
months of appropriate clinical experience is required. At a
manager's discretion, employees with 6 months of experience who are
exceptional performers may be eligible for this level. Degrees,
Licensures, Certifications Must have current or compact RN
licensure in the state of North Carolina. BLS required. Duke is an
