General Practice opening in Durham, North Carolina. Maxim Healthcare Staffing is seeking a Phlebotomist to draw blood from patients or donors at the Durham VA Medical Center.

Contractors will be working with: - In-patient and outpatient setting - Geriatric patient population - Various behavioral groups who may be disoriented, disabled, or reduced physical function - Clinically complex group of chronic/mentally ill patients Job Description: The Department of Veteran Affairs Mid-Atlantic Health Care Network, (VISN 6) has an immediate need for the services of Six (6) Certified Phlebotomists to work at the Durham VAMC location. The contractor shall provide certified phlebotomists to perform phlebotomy services onsite at Durham VAMC, 508 Fulton Street, Durham, NC 27705 in accordance with the specifications contained herein to beneficiaries of Durham VA Health Care System locations. The phlebotomists shall be highly reliable in providing services and support that meet or exceed customer requirements and expectations. Contractor phlebotomists must have direct work experience working in a healthcare setting. The distribution of the six (6) Phlebotomists will be on a shift basis. Phlebotomists are needed to work an 8-hour day shift, an 8-hour evening shift or an 8-hour night shift and for a total of 40-hours per week. Weekend and Holiday shifts will be included in the shift scheduling. Weekend and Holiday shifts may be day shift, evening shift or night shift. Phlebotomists will be on a daily rotating schedule that will be prepared by a government supervisor. The daily rotating schedule will include the facility location the Phlebotomists are required to report to for that day, who covers who for lunches and for breaks and will be issued/posted every two weeks. The government supervisor or lead will also be instructing the contract phlebotomists when and where to get STAT/ASAP/routine blood work from patients within the facilities they are assigned. There is a need for six (6) phlebotomists that will work on a scheduled shift basis, i.e., an 8-hour day shift, an 8-hour evening shift or an 8-hour night shift. Weekend and Holiday shifts will be included in the shift scheduling. Weekend and Holiday shifts may be day shift, evening shift or night shift. Monthly work schedules will routinely be posted at least two weeks in advance. Daily schedules will be done 24 hours in advance and all schedules are subject to change due to staffing needs. Responsibilities:

  • The phlebotomist(s) shall be responsible for accurately identifying patients, obtaining the proper specimens, recognizing and immediately reporting adverse patient reaction to venipuncture procedures to appropriate VA personnel.
  • Phlebotomist(s) shall be responsible for processing laboratory specimens, computer related functions such as accessioning specimens and other related tasks. Phlebotomist(s) shall refer problems/inquiries to VA team leaders or supervisors.
  • The phlebotomist(s) shall have the use of all required equipment, supplies and forms for performing services required by this contract.
  • Phlebotomist(s) shall complete all Medical Center's required mandatory education and confirm all laboratory policies and procedures directly related to their job duties.
  • Phlebotomist(s) shall follow hospital and laboratory policies and procedures, including safety and computer policies.
  • Clinical/Technical: 90% of the time involved in patient care.
  • Administrative: 10% of time not involved in patient care.
  • Staff Meetings: The phlebotomist(s) shall attend staff meetings as required by the Salisbury VAMC Pathology & Laboratory Medicine Service. Contractor to communicate with supervisor and/or COR on this requirement and report any conflicts that may interfere with compliance with this requirement.
  • The phlebotomist(s) shall participate in all quality and performance improvement activities to ensure compliance.
  • The phlebotomist(s) shall follow all established patient safety and infection control standards of care. Phlebotomist(s) shall make every effort to prevent specimen mislabels, multiple venipuncture procedure on the same patient while providing care. All events related to patient injury, and other breeches of patient safety shall be reported to the supervisor and/or COR, as soon as practicable (but within the eight (8) hour shift). Contractors shall notify supervisor of incident and submit a P&LMS Incident /Variance Report, following up with supervisor as required or requested.

    Qualifications:

    Education & Experience:
    Phlebotomist(s) assigned by the Contractor to perform the services covered by this contract should have one (1) year of specialized experience performing phlebotomy and other specimen collection procedures, accessioning and specimen prep within a clinical laboratory or medical center setting. Completion of a post-high school Phlebotomy Training Program at an accredited business or technical school, community college or university for which high school graduation or equivalency is the normal prerequisite. Certification from an approved Phlebotomy Training Program by the National Phlebotomy Association (NPA), ASPT, ASCP or other equivalent certification agency is recommended but not required.

    Competency & Technical Proficiency: Phlebotomist(s) shall be fully trained and completely competent to perform the required work. All contract phlebotomist(s) shall be technically proficient in the skills necessary to fulfill the government's requirements, including the ability to speak, understand, read and write English fluently. Contractor shall provide documents to the CO/COR to verify current and ongoing competency, skills, certification and/or licensure related to the provision of care and/or services performed. Contractor shall provide verifiable evidence of all educational and training experiences including gaps in educational history for all phlebotomist(s) and phlebotomist(s) shall be responsible for abiding by the Facility's Medical Staff By-Laws, rules, and regulations (referenced herein) that govern medical staff behavior. In addition, the phlebotomist(s) shall have the following skills:
    - Familiar in dealing with hospital patient population, including drawing elderly and difficult patients. - Shall have tact and personality conducive to interacting with ill, disoriented, sometimes difficult inpatient and outpatient population. - Phlebotomist(s) shall be required to have basic typing and PC computer skills. - Documentation and ordering of test orders shall be done electronically on the Veterans Health Information Systems and Technology Architecture (VistA) computer system. As a part of the orientation process, phlebotomist(s) shall be required to request and obtain an access code to the VistA computer system. At that time, phlebotomist(s) shall have access to training. Additional Requirements:
    - High School diploma or its equivalent.
    - Full command, verbal and written, of the English language.
    - Successful completion of Phlebotomist training with subsequent certification as a Phlebotomist
    - Minimum of one year Phlebotomist or relevant experience preferred
    - Current PPD or Chest X-ray
