It could be someone who is interested in criminal legal research and academia down the road. Associate Director Occupational Summary
The Wilson Duke Center for Science and Justice aims to conduct interdisciplinary research to advance criminal justice and civil rights. The Center's mission includes three important components: (1) research, (2) policy and law reform, and (3) education. This mission brings together faculty from across the university, law students, und ergraduate and graduate students, medical trainees, and policymakers and lawmakers in a collective effort to use research to inform criminal justice problems in North Carolina, across the United States, and around the globe. Although a central goal of the Center will be to convey the results of its research to policymakers, it will be non-partisan, and it will not engage in lobbying. The Center will conduct original research, convey findings to policymakers and the public, and organize and host conferences. TheWilson Center's Associate Director will provide direction and administrative oversight to all Center activities in concert with the Law School Dean and supervised by the Center's faculty Director, Brandon L. Garrett. Work Performed
The Associate Director will be responsible for the day-to-day operations of the Wilson Center. These duties will include:

  • Project management. Leading and conducted the tracking of deliverables, deadlines,events schedules, budgeting, staff time, and other Center products.
  • Provide staff leadership. Recommend, to the Director, various personnel actions including, but not limited to, hiring, performance appraisal, promotions, transfers and vacation schedules.
  • Overseeing media and communications efforts, including social media and Center websites.
  • Drafting policy papers, letters, and other media concerning Center research.
  • Establish and maintain contacts with outside organizations such as government agencies, professional organizations, and other Universities to aid in achieving overall program objectives; facilitating collaborations on research concerning criminal justice, across Duke University and with outside collaborators.
  • Develop grant proposals to support Center research and conferences. Participate as key personnel on grants, coordinate with relevant personnel on financial reporting, and prepare progress and final narrative reports.
  • Organizing conferences of interest to academics, private sector leaders, and government decision makers, as well as other Center events, such as report launches, press conferences, and symposia.
  • Participate in and help organize civic education and other legal policy projects. Preferred Education and Experience
    As a primary focus of the Center is criminal law related research and policy, candidates should have demonstrated skills in research and writing, and an interest in criminal justice policy. Specific knowledge of criminal law and policy is also preferred, but not required.-- Skills and Abilities
    • Highly effective interpersonal and communications skills
    • Demonstrated ability to work well with multiple constituencies, including faculty and university officials, policy makers, and corporate and other private sector leaders
    • Ability and willingness to organize and execute conferences, symposia, and other events
    • Ability to facilitate new collaborations, including by securing outside funding support Minimum Qualifications
      A JD degree or equivalent is required for the position. An advanced academic degree in a related field is preferred. Experience
      A minimum of 3 years work experience is required.
