Position Overview

This position oversees all aspects of Building Management Systems and automation support for Facilities, Manufacturing, and Packaging processes and equipment.

Key Responsibility Areas

  • Department Management: Manage the Facilities Automation Department to ensure automation and BMS (Building Management System) controlled systems are maintained and remain in a compliant, functional, efficient, and reliable state
  • Disaster Recovery Readiness: Oversee the Disaster Recovery Plan for automated and BMS controlled systems. Ensure database backup and recovery files are maintained in accordance with site procedures and compliant with regulatory requirements
  • Outside Service Management: Assist Procurement in negotiating and maintaining critical contracts that support facilities automation and BMS systems
  • Project Management: Manage, schedule and lead the planning and execution of automation and BMS engineering aspects of both capital and non-capital projects related to production and/or facility requirements while ensuring alignment with approved budget

    Specific Responsibilities

    Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

    • Provide effective leadership to Automation department; train and develop a high performing automation team
    • Maintain policies and procedures related to Automation department
    • Lead automation activities in the organization related to programmable logic controllers, distributed control systems and original equipment manufacturer platforms
    • Collaborate with Operations, Quality and Technical colleagues to lead the organization to resolve complex issues and implement solutions related to controls and automation
    • Identify and implement systems to monitor and control systems and processes; ensure systems are developed and maintained in compliance with 21 CFR Part 11 and site procedures.
    • Monitor and maintain BMS alarming and activity logs to ensure critical systems remain functional and operating in a ready to operate condition
    • Author and execute BMS and CSV (Computer System Validation) qualification protocols
    • Author, collaborate, edit, acquire, and maintain current drawings, schematics, SOPs, manuals, specification, Management of Change (MOC), Impact Review (IR), and Risk Analysis (RA) documents for automation and BMS systems

    • Serve as subject matter expert and provide technical support to regulatory, client, and internal audits; assist Quality Assurance in formulating response to audit findings
    • Develop and maintain key performance metrics to ensure site and department goals are met
    • Schedule routine, non-routine, and emergency work events with other departments to minimize downtime
    • Provide oversight to contractors and vendors
    • Ensure adherence to preventive maintenance and calibration schedules
    • Identify, procure and maintain critical spare parts inventory
    • Provide budget plans and rationale for Capex and Opex planning
    • Qualifications

      • Bachelors degree (preferably in Mechanical, Chemical, Electrical, or Automation Engineering) with at least 5 years of directly related experience
      • Associate degree (preferably in Mechanical, Chemical, Electrical, or Automation Engineering) with at least 10 years of related experience
      • Must have direct experience in application of system development life cycle principles in a pharmaceutical manufacturing organization, including applied knowledge of 21 CFR Part 11
      • Must have knowledge of facilities and process equipment instrumentation, PLCs, hardware, software and facility automation systems
      • Practical knowledge of HVAC systems and controls; room pressurization; environmental control
      • Formal BMS/BAS training; program certification preferred; formal training without certification and five years practical knowledge; 10 years practical knowledge if no formal training
      • At least 3 years of experience with 3-5 years required in facilities/maintenance systems and processes
      • Knowledge of MS Excel required
      • Knowledge of MS Project, document management processes, WebEx communications desired
      • Project management experience preferred
      • Knowledge of AutoCAD or SolidWorks preferred
      • Six Sigma training desired
      • Working knowledge of hazardous chemicals and related disposal, OSHA, EPA, FDA and EU regulations
      • Excellent verbal and written communication skills required; ability to clearly and concisely communicate technical information is essential
      • Must maintain professionalism and flexibility while working under pressure of deadlines and dealing with ambiguous situations
