Smart Wires is currently looking for a Mechanical Engineer based in Durham, NC to support our Engineering team. This position is a hybrid work from office/work from home, as long as you live within 50 miles of the office.

The Position
The Mechanical Engineer is a key part of the Engineering team and will assume an important role in commercialization of new products by providing support with DFX, procurements, in-process testing, manufacturing, and EOL activities. Under the direction of and reporting to the Product Design Manager, primary duties are to support the design and development of engineering products.
This position requires a high degree of detail-orientation; qualified candidates are highly motivated, self-directed, excellent communicators and collaborate well across workstreams and teams.
Primary Responsibilities

  • Design components, assemblies, and tooling in support of NPI
  • Analyze and solve technical problems, and provide solutions that can be implemented in a timely manner
  • Analyze failures reported by Quality and Service departments, and create engineering change orders as required
  • Produce engineering documents including part and assembly drawings, manufacturing instructions, and bill of material
  • Perform laboratory and factory tests to verify design functionality and validate performance predicted by simulations Requirements

    Required Skills and Experience
    • Must have BS in Mechanical Engineering
    • 5+ years of hands-on engineering work experience
    • Strong proficiency in using SolidWorks, SolidWorks PDM Vault, and SolidWorks Simulation Package to create design concepts, manage and generate detailed drawings and assemblies, analyze parts, and material
    • Competent in using Agile product lifecycle management (PLM) to manage BoM, ECO, MCO, CARs, work instructions, in-process testing, and reports
    • Familiarity with FEA tools for structural and thermal analysis
    • Strong communications capabilities
    • Experience in test fixture design, procurement, and fabrication
    • Good and in-depth knowledge of engineering materials and manufacturing methods, especially aluminum, copper, and composites for fatigue, wear, impact, temperature extremes, dielectric insulations for high and low voltages, and aging due to long term exposure to weather
    • Good knowledge and experience regarding silver/nickel coating
    • Experience with welding and corrosion of steel components Desired Skills and Experience
      • MS in Mechanical Engineering
      • 5+ years of design and manufacturing experience
      • Having been involved in commercialization of new products and transition from development to mass manufacturing Location

          • This role has occasional travel requirements, up to 15 %, to our manufacturing facility in St. Petersburg, FL Safety Requirements
