Smart Wires is currently looking for a Power Electronics
Engineer based in Durham, NC to support our Engineering team.
The Power Electronics Engineer with emphasis on circuit design is a
key part of the Engineering team and overall product-development
Develop high-reliability, high-performance grid-connected converter
systems for mission-critical applications.
Conduct development analysis and design optimization of power
electronics, magnetic components, and power supply sub-systems.
Participate with engineers and technicians in the design and
testing of electronic subsystems.
Support the development of test plans and perform testing of
devices and components.
Perform computer-aided design and modeling of electronics and
Help vendors and partners understand the requirements and develop
the capabilities to produce and support Company devices.
Assist in monitoring and performing quality assurance, reliability
engineering on vendor manufacturing of components.
Prepare and/or review test reports and related documents.
Support technical documentation.
Attend relevant industry conferences to keep abreast of trends.
Additional Responsibilities For Strong Candidates
Develop expert knowledge of product-development roadmaps,
next-generation technology, and perform detailed systems, controls
(with related communications), electrical & electronics analysis
and design integration for respective products.
Conceive of and execute simulations for power-systems analysis and
value-proposition assessment to aid in the power electronics design
and feature development.
Develop a technical and application understanding of competitive
and substitute technologies including cost models.
Engage with customer technical interfaces with marketing associates
to understand core problems and devise solutions and features to
maximize delivered value at competitive costs.
Lead the development of the power electronics and controls
functions, while interfacing with electro-magnetic, mechanical and
power system engineers to introduce complex systems to
Develop and supervise the development of drawings and
specifications for the manufacture of the electrical and
Minimum 5 years of experience in power supply design with knowledge
of DC-DC/ DC-AC power conversion topologies, and PCB layout.
Familiar with PCBA design and coating for condensing humidity
Experience in design of PCBAs for medium voltage application with
in-depth knowledge of available solutions to mitigate creepage and
clearance related concerns
Familiar with design practices to prevent power supply faults and
Knowledge of product thermals, IC and product packaging
Familiar with power semiconductors: MOSFETs, IGBTs, Gan, etc.
Experience with EMI design and troubleshooting
Experience in design and analyze analog circuitry, digital signals,
PWMs and GPIO
Experience in design power stages including estimation of losses
Knowledge of high frequency magnetics, design and analysis of high
frequency inductors and transformers
Familiar with MATLAB/Simulink, PSPICE
Hands-on experience in development of 10+ kW power converters.
Experience working in a fast-paced start-up environment.
Highly organized and detail-oriented.
Ability to work both independently and in a team environment with

Experience in medium voltage (1000 V or more) converter
