Founded in 1998 to provide efficient, responsive care, the health system offers a full network of health services and encompasses Duke University Hospital, Duke Regional Hospital, Duke Raleigh Hospital, Duke Primary Care, Private Diagnostic Clinic, Duke Home and Hospice, Duke Health and Wellness, and multiple affiliations. --Occupational Summary--Provide basic professional engineering services for the Neurophysiology Lab at the Duke Center for Autism and Brain Development by performing a variety of technical duties involved in planning, design, construction, alteration and testing related to electrical, electronic, biomedical and/or mechanical engineering fields according to established procedures or instructions in support of research and development activities related to electroencephalography, eye-tracking, video observation, and other biobehavioral laboratory testing measures.Candidates will be expected to maintain all electronic equipment, including video recording systems and systems to measure biological signals, in the Center for Autism research labs. Candidates will maintain availability during research visits to troubleshoot and solve technical and recording failures. Candidates will provide construction support to install new equipment and replace parts. Candidates will ensure all electronic data files are accurately copied to and stored on password-protected Duke storage networks.Qualified candidates will be familiar with some basic laws and concepts frequently used in signal processing, including Ohms law, properties of electromagnetic fields, Fourier transformation, amplification and filtering of signals, thermal noise, and signal-to-noise ratio. Candidates will be expected to quantify and reduce all sources of external noise in order to enhance the biological signal-to-noise ratio. Biological measurements are continuous biomedical signals that must be digitized by sampling at a given time interval and converting the amplitude scale using an analog to digital converter. These data sets are acquired using proprietary acquisition systems with integrated hardware and software tools. In depth knowledge of the measurement process is critical for effective data analysis, because each type of system is associated with specific artifacts and problems. Technically accurate measurement and proper treatment of artifacts are essential for data processing. --Work PerformedPerform basic electrical and structural engineering duties according to established procedures or instructions to design, develop, construct and test specialized instruments, equipment, apparatus and systems for the development of engineering projects, the solution of engineering problems, and other research and development activities. Provide assistance, instruction and consultation to faculty and student researchers and to staff members for resolution of special problems; demonstrate techniques for operating specialized equipment. Maintain multiple laboratory sites, and all video recording equipment housed within the research labs. Equipment includes both analog and digital devices that are synchronized using specialized software. Develop and maintain software-specific programming code necessary for research data collection and analysis. Maintain a cloud-based code repository to document changes to coding files and share repositories with collaborators and study monitors. Work with research team to collect electronic research data and prepare data for further analysis, including developing computer code to calculate dependent variables of interest to the research team for use in grants, conference presentations, posters, and scientific publications.Collect information and data through observation, experimentation, and various other methods; develop and maintain technical files and manuals of information. Recommend and procure electrical, mechanical, biomedical, and video equipment appropriate for laboratory or project needs; maintain records of expenditures.Ensure compliance with applicable safety and efficacy requirements.Perform routine maintenance on components, apparatus and systems; troubleshoot problems and perform repair work as needed. Identify malfunctioning equipment in routine testing before the equipment is needed for scientific testing. Develop a plan for fixing or replacing the equipment, including preparing budgets and timelines for said repairs.
